Making that Perfect Display for your Science Project

You have worked hard on your science project. You went through mountains of ideas and picked out the best one. Then you got to work building up your model. You went through the whole process and finally got your experiments right. Now you have the perfect science fair project in your hands. You are waiting eagerly for the day of the science fair.

The day that every one gets to see the great project you made. Just a little thought here, have you considered how you are going to display your wonderful project? Is there a display board accompanying your model to explain exactly what it is all about? Or will you personally explain just what your project is all about to each and every person who walks across to see it?

Here are a few things that you can do as even an elementary science project needs a great display. That’s why you must not leave the display to chance. You need to put in a bit of effort into just how you want to show off your model or experiment or what ever you have made for the science fair. The ideas given in this post will help you to do just that.

Why not make the perfect display for your Science Project. After all you did make the perfect science project.

Converting Ideas into Science Fair projects

When you think about a science fair you need to get the right project to motivate you. There are many ideas that can float around in your head. The more ideas you get, the more confused you get about which one is the right one to convert into a science project. This overflowing number of ideas is what you need to deal with.

So how do you sift through them all to come down to the right one? You put in a few questions to see if  an idea will easily convert into a science project worthy of the science fair. We can call these questions “Parameters”. So if an idea passes the first parameter, it moves into the second round of consideration. Rather like the boxer who must keep defeating his opponents till the final game to the championship.

You get the idea. First get all the ideas that you can and write them down. Now test them against your parameters such as “how much will it cost” or “how long will it take to do” or “is this safe to handle without an adult”. Once you do this exercise you will find that a number of the impractical ideas drop away.

Then you are left with some good ones that will actually work as a great science fair project. Here’s a sample project that I worked out that can guide you. Naturally you can add your own ideas and find something that works better for you. Have fun in the idea sorting process.

How to Present Your Science Fair Project

The science fair is not just a place to try out science experiments and learn about science. It is also a place where you can perfect your people skills.  You have to interact with the judges and impress them. Its not all about the science project at the fair. It is also about how you introduce it to the judges.

While some students are naturally good at getting their point across well, others need to practice a bit before they give a presentation on their science projects. In fact even if you are confident of presenting the project well, you might want to consider a mock presentation on family and friends before the main event.

This article here will help you improve your science fair presentation skills. There are a few good pointers that you can learn from. So be sure to read it and then give the best presentation ever for your science fair project. After all if you have put in so much effort to make a great project, it would make sense to put in a bit more effort to present it well.

Winning an award at the science fair can be a thrilling achievement. So why not put your best foot forward and actually get a great project at the show? Like I told you, the science fair is not just about science. Its also about the people behind the science.

Science projects need to improve your knowledge

What’s the big idea behind science fairs? Why do we have them? Is it supposed to serve any purpose other than causing students extra work in an already busy schedule? Don’t they just add more pressure on a student already bogged down with the numerous school activities. These are questions that a busy and irate student may well ask. The answer is simple. Science fairs are a tool to help you learn.

The science projects that you make are a way to help increase your knowledge. While you may know a bit about a scientific concept from your science book, it is given a whole new dimension when you do a project based on it. You become far better adept at the practical aspect of the concept. You take the concept out of the book and see the science behind it in action.

You learn new terminology related to the field that you are doing your science fair project in. For instance if you are doing an experiment on liquids, you might also learn something about temperature and pressure. You might learn about viscosity as well. That is something that you will surely not think about if your experiment is based on electricity. Nor would you think of Newtonian Liquids if you are doing an experiment on electricity. If you want to know what Newtonian Liquids are check out the link.

So having a science fair is a great way to see what all interesting projects others come up with. It is also a good tool to test just how well you have grasped the scientific concept that you are working on. So while it may seem like an extra burden, it does actually have a great purpose.

Writing Your Project Report

There is excitement in the air as you decide on your science fair project idea. There is fun and frolic as you experiment with all the different possibilities that your project ideas throw up. Then finally the science project is done, and now you need to write your project report. Did your enthusiasm level just drop ten notches?

If you are like most kids it probably did. After all the fun part of the project is over and the dull part of the report remains to be done. The truth is that it does not have to be a boring chore to complete. You can have fun designing a layout to showcase your science fair project in your science report.

All it takes is a bit of organization and some good planning. And when its over you can go back to doing more experiments that are fun. Here is some fun you can have with Static Electricity. Of course there is always the danger that the fun stuff you do may be an even better idea for a project for the science fair. In which case you can always scrap the first one and use the new idea.

That will mean writing a new project report as well. It will be a little bit of extra work, but don’t shy away from it. The new project may be better than the old one. It may even be a prize winning project idea. Make sure you do the right thin and of course have a whole lot of fun doing it.

Pick Your Project

I have to do a project for the science fair. Where do I start? This is a very common question with most students. The answer to this problem is asking yourself more questions. Ask yourself specific questions like what scientific principle interests you? What kind of a science project can be constructed out of it? The more questions you ask, the more specific the image of what you need to do will be.

Personally I feel that going through a list of science projects that others have done will help give you a better idea about what you want to do. So ask around in school as to what exactly your class mates are planing to do. Ask your seniors what they made last year. Ask your science teacher for ideas as well. Most people love to discuss science projects that they have already worked on.

This will allow you to expand your horizons. The more you see and hear about the more you learn. That in turn will help you decide what is more interesting for you personally. Then once you have narrowed down on an idea ask yourself more questions. How are you going to go about making the project? What all material will you need? How much adult supervision will be required?

The more specific your questions and answers are the easier it will be for you to handle your project. Here is a useful resource on how to ask the right questions. This will help you to stay on track and get the details fixed up faster. You can have a lot of fun in the whole process. It really is very simple when you know what to expect.

Writing Your Science Fair Project Report

As a teacher when you have to read through dozens of science fair reports you tend to get overwhelmed at the effort that some students put into their science projects. Some of them do a really stellar job with their reports.  At the same time it is easy to spot the lazy ones who have copied down the theory from a book and finished the report without adding any insight of their own.

To make a report interesting for the teacher to read, it does need to have more than the theory behind the science project that you have submitted. A few illustrations will help. And believe me if you have drawn them yourself, it does fetch a more favorable result. Even if its not as neat and tidy as a print out will be. Although it will take up more time.

Also make sure to add how you went about the project. The way you experienced the theory of science in practice is what doing the project is all about. That makes it even more interesting reading for the teacher, as she is able to gauge how much you gained from doing the science fair project.

Keep it focused and don’t ramble on about unrelated details. Just remember writing a science fair report is not difficult. Just keep the basics in mind and write what you know. Here’s an article that might give you some ideas to keep the report you write interesting. All the best writing that science fair project report.

The Science Fair Project Report

Writing a science fair project report need not be a tedius task. As long as you have a clear lay out in mind you can finish the report in 15 minutes. No I am not joking. 15 minutes is all the time that the report content will take. How you decorate and present the report may take more time.

So how does one write the science fair report in 15 minutes? For starters don’t attempt to write the report before you make the science project. The entire theory that you apply in the project will go into the report. So it makes sense to finish the experimenting and make your science project.

That way you already know the theory and how it translates in practice. Now you can sum it up easily in your own words. You don’t have to think of ways to make the book language seem less formal. It will also be easier to add relevant diagrams .  After all a circuit diagram is much simpler to make once you have actually made the circuit.

Now that you have all the theroy in, throw in a flowery introduction and a conclusion. The content of your project report is ready. Now proof read it, and type it out to take print outs. Then get a good folder to put the report into. If you must use specific folders that the school provides, even better.

The whole process will not take more than the 15 minutes that I said it would. For more ideas take a look here. I am sure you will have no problem what so ever with the report after that. So once you have the project ready, set the clock to time yourself as you write out the report.

Science Fair project does not equal to boring!

Are you the kind of person who thinks science is boring? Do you feel learning about science makes you sleepy? That it will serve no purpose if you know about conductivity or not. That science fair projects are a waste of time. And that they are the most boring activity that you have to do as part of school work?

Then this should help change your mind. Think about some things that you enjoy. Do you like to watch TV? Play video games or even play basket ball? Do you think they have nothing to do with science? Think again. Each of these activities that you enjoy is based on some scientific principle.

The TV you watch was initially based on the Cathode Ray principle. Now the screens are getting slimmer because they are using the LCD or Liquid Crystle Display technology. Did the TV just get invented one day? No it was probably a science project in the making for some time before it came to the form we see it in now. And guess what people are still making working models of TVs that will be better than the ones we have right now.

Constant innovation is why science is dynamic and never dull. The video games that were available a generation ago were plugged into the TV. Now you have hand held video games. Miniaturisation is also achieved through scientific exploration. Can you imagine that the next science fair project you make could turn into cutting edge technology one day? How can that be boring! Just change how you think about science and the boring tag will disapper.

Materials to use for a Display Board

What do materials do you use to make the display board for your science fair project? The usual answers would include white paper, pens, and coloring material. It is what you would use for any of the project work that you get in school, isn’t it?

Now tell me why you can’t use something more unconventional? Does it have to be on paper? Can you think of using a different base such as a metal sheet? Or may be the inner smooth bark of a tree? Wouldn’t you agree that it would make an interesting display board?

Try and use the material that complements the project you are doing. For instance if it is a fauna or plant related related project the tree bark would be a fabulous idea. If you are doing something with electric current, a few wires in mock circuits would give the display board a great look.

Just select the topic of the science project first. Then once you know in which direction your science fair project is headed, you can choose complementary materials to spruce up your display board. There are so many creative options when you just stop and think about it.

Yes it is tough to narrow down your choice to a single idea. Some things seem interesting before you begin them, but become boring when you try out the project. Electrical Conductors are easy and fun to do. Plus the display board does not get a very long look over when there is a working model to play around with.
